Soft-15khz is a software project maintained by BYOAC German member SailorSat. Due to the heavy development currently going into this project, the information on this wiki page may very well be out of date. Please check her original project threads at ArcadeInfo.de for current details and update this wiki page as necessary.

PLEASE NOTE: Soft-15KHz is a Windows application and will only function once Windows has loaded. Any resolutions that a computer outputs before Soft-15KHz kicks in may be harmful to standard arcade monitors.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

About
The project “Soft-15KHz” is about reprogramming of video adapters and/or their drivers to make them usable with normal Arcade monitors and/or TVs. It does this by doing small changes to the Windows registry to add typical arcade screen resolutions, as well as tweaking some existing ones, and locking out all others.

It can be used as a simple free alternative to Powerstrip to allow Windows based computers to display on real arcade monitors without the need for specialized hardware. Unlike Powerstrip it has been developed with only arcade monitors and resolutions in mind and is streamlined and tweaked to help home arcade users.

Status
The project is to be considered ALPHA Status but should work as intended.
Removing Resolutions
Most arcade monitors will not support every resolution here, so you may wish to exclude any unsupported resolutions from your set up. To do this create a text file called custom15khz.txt (or custom25khz.txt or custom31khz.txt depending on your needs) in the same folder as Soft15khz.exe and, for example, to disable the 321x256 resolution add the line remove 321,256.

Adding Custom Resolutions
Similarly to removing resolutions, custom resolutions can be added. This is done by creating a text file called custom15khz.txt (or custom25khz.txt or custom31khz.txt depending on your needs) in the same folder as Soft15khz.exe and adding the modeline details for each custom resolution.

For Example:
modeline "1920x1080@60i" 82,817 1920 2104 2288 2456 1080 1107 1108 1125 interlace -hsync -vsync

Some Useful Modelines
If you have a multisync arcade monitor that can display 25khz (EGA) and 31khz (VGA) resolutions, you can add some very useful modelines which enable a large number of vertical games to be displayed with the correct number of horizontal lines. You can also run 1024x768 in interlaced mode. Here are a few modelines which have been tested on a Betson Multisync monitor:

modeline "432x324@60" 13.4 432 440 496 536 324 326 330 351 -hsync -vsync

modeline "416x312@60" 13 416 424 480 520 312 314 318 338 -hsync -vsync

modeline "1024x768@59,959i" 29,49 1024 1040 1136 1200 768 776 782 820 interlace -hsync -vsync

Supported Drivers and Adapters
It should work with any NVidia (ForceWare 66.93 and up), ATI (Catalyst 2.5 and up), Matrox PowerDesk and 3Dfx Voodoo3/4/5 Driver, which themselfs support a large number of modern video adapters.
Attention! The Windows default drivers are NOT compatible.
What is MAME?
(Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is one of (if not the) most widely used videogame emulators. Currently, it supports over six thousand different arcade games. Standard versions of MAME can be found an MAME.net, intermediate versions and development notes are at MAMEDev.org.

Since MAME is an open source project, many people have created modified versions with various extra tweaks and features. You can find some versions on it own page (Mame Modified Versions).
MAME is the main reason, you create your own arcade controls and put MAME into your cabinet.

The default MAME keys to wire your controls to can be found at: http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/mameguide/mamecontrol.htm

Support Files
MAME or its modified versions support extra files form of cheats, hiscore saving and more.

* CHEAT
Cheat.dat is useful for both players and developers. Cheating allows players to get past difficult situations and it let's developers test games without having to be good at all the games.

* HIGH SCORE
Hiscore.dat is a complimentary file to help MAME in saving high scores in version 0.32 to 0.107u1. Most Mame games save their high scores by default, but over 2500 games do not save their high scores.

The Hiscore.dat file tells Mame some additional information and how to read and store the high scores using the /hi directory instead of /nvram.

As of MAME version 0.107u1, however, Hiscore.dat is no longer supported. Hiscore.dat has been replaced by the use of save states due to issues that the file caused with proper emulation.

<br style="clear:both;"/>

* COMMANDS

Commands can be shown either in game or in a front end. Commands allow users to view, among other things, the individual command lists for games. This is especially useful for Fighting Games, but can also show users what individual buttons (and combinations) do without having to press them all. The screenshot is from within MAME Plus!

<br style="clear:both;"/>

* ARTWORK

In game artwork is supported in MAME in versions 0.61 and later. Some arcade machines had images inside them onto which the screen was projected, had artwork overlaid on the monitor or had LED lights on the cabinet that were illuminated during game play. This can't be emulated but is instead simulated with a digital picture of the artwork. Some games, like Frogs, Video Pinball, Drag Race, Armor Attack and Warrior are nearly impossible to play without the original artwork. Other games have elaborate decorative monitor bezels that are not functional but many fans feel they add to the arcade experience.

Starting with version 0.107, MAME began to supports hi-resolution artwork and changed the file format for the layout (from .art to .lay). Pre-0.107 artwork with .art layout files will not work with MAME version 0.107 and later.

To use these files, save them to the /artwork directory.

Post-MAME 0.107 Homepage: http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/mame_artwork.html

<br style="clear:both;"/>

I upgraded MAME/MAME32 and now I get errors that files/roms are missing. Why?
As MAME progresses, romsets are sometimes changed to more accurately reflect the original hardware. There are several reasons the romsets 'change'. Here are some of them (courtesy of u_rebelscum):<br/><br/>
Case 1: bad dump now replaced by good dump<br/>
Case 2: incomplete dump (X chip now emulated now needs Y ROM not needed before)<br/>
Case 3: new dump from confirmed source, old dump from unreliable/unknown source<br/>
Case 4: new dump is real release, old dump is hacked board<br/>
Case 5: new dump is real release, old dump is prototype<br/>
Case 6: new dump is wider release, old dump is local release<br/><br/>

The first three add/replace to a ROM, the last three usually involve renaming. The short answer is that you need to find a correct romset for the version of MAME you are using, as old romsets may not work with a newer version of MAME.
