Many people save space by making their MAME cabinets with only enough controls for two players. But there are many 3-player and 4-player games which can be utilized on such a system, either by changing a software setting, using a mame rom clone, or by simply ignoring the extra player features. The following is a list of games that can be utilized in such a way.

Note: All these games are current as of MAME version .142. Future versions may change clone names, add in new options, etc.

==Dip switches==

The Dip Switches menu in mame represents physical toggle switches in a real arcade cabinet, which the owner could gain access to by opening a panel. To change dip switch settings, simply hit Tab in MAME, and use the arrow keys to navigate to the Dip Switches menu.

The following games can be put in a two-player mode by using this menu:
* B. Rap Boys
* Blazing Tornado (must choose 'vs.' mode or 'team' mode)
* Bomber Man World
* Bucky O'Hare
* Crypt Killer
* Desert Breaker
* Dynablaster / Bomber Man
* Grudge Match
* Hit the Ice
* King of Dragons, The
* Knights of the Round
* Mercs (Also need to set coin chutes to 1)
* Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
* NBA Jam
* NBA Jam TE
* NFL Blitz '99
* NFL Blitz 2000 Gold Edition
* Paddle Mania (Set 'match type' to 'A to C')
* Revolution X
* Rim Rockin' Basketball
* Snow Bros. 2
* Stone Ball
* Super High Impact
* Super Slam
* Trog
* Turbo Force
* U.S. Championship V'ball
* Warlords
* Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa
* WWF WrestleFest

==Service Menu==

The Service Menu can be accessed by hitting the F2 key in most games. (Some newer games require you to ''hold'' F2 for several seconds.) This brings up the game's configuration screen, where game options can be changed, as well as performing input and output calibrations.

The following games can be put in a two-player mode by using this menu:
* Arabian Fight
* Armored Warriors
* Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
* Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom
* Dunk Mania
* Gauntlet Legends
* Gauntlet Dark Legacy
* Knuckle Heads
* Muscle Bomber Duo
* Numan Athletics
* Ring Rage
* Saturday Night Slam Masters
* Spider-Man: The Videogame
* Super World Court
* Warriors of Fate
* Wayne Gretzky's 3d Hockey
* World Beach Volley

==2-player Clones==

If no Dip Switch or Service Menu changes enable a 2-player mode, your next recourse is use a clone of the game that is a 2-player version. Remember that for the game to work, you'll need roms for both the parent and the desired clone.
==No Other Options==

Sadly, there are a few games that have no decent 2-player. Most of these are 3-player games with no 2-player cabinet versions built. For these, you can only ignore the third player's GUI and play as normal. This will also usually mean that if there are multiple 'characters' that the cabinet will assign one per control set, and not let you pick it yourself, as with 2-player cabinets. So if, for example, you want to play the Wolf-monster in Rampage, you will need to remap some controls and decide which of the other two monsters you don't want to play as.

Some 3P/4P -capable games default in their dip switch / service menu settings to 2-player mode. These games require no changes to work as intended, and are only included here as they are listed in data files (such as nplayers.ini or controls.ini) as having more than two players, and therefore may come up in, say, a RomLister search.
==Mala LEDWiz Plugin v2.0 by Swindus, Edge & Loadman==

[[http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=51525.0;attach=69423]]

'''Overview:'''
The Mala LEDWiz Plugin was designed to be a simple but powerful tool to help light up your control panels. We tried to make it as customizable as possible, and we are always open for more suggestions.

----

'''Features:'''

*Light up your controls in any RGB color by using the LEDWiz intensity levels
*Light up your controls as you scroll through game lists in Mala
*Light up your game specific controls when you launch a game in MAME
*Set default lighting schemes for other emulators as well - not just Mame
*Over-ride default lighting settings for specific games (ie, NeoGeo games)
*FLASH-N-SPEAK - Plugin will flash and speak each control (FIRE, JUMP, etc) upon game launch
*Flash all your buttons on Mala start, Mala exit, game start, gamelist change, etc.
*Random Attract Mode - Randomly runs one of the many ledwiz animations (LWA) included [THANKS HK!]
*Support for ADMIN buttons:
*User can assign friendly names to admin buttons (ie, Menu, Pause, etc)
*User can make admin buttons stay lit (no matter what game is selected)
*EZ-RGB Data Entry - To help speed up data entry when configuring your panel, the config wizard will automatically populate the RGB values based on only one input. For instance, if your RGB has its R wire in input 1, the plugin will automatically input G in input 2 and B in input 3.
*As you configurate your panel in the wizard, you can see your buttons lit up real time. Make a change and instantly see it!
*Support for both RGB and Single Color LEDs
*All screens sized for 640x480.

'''New MaLa Plugin - LEDBlinky!'''

Here's what it can do:

Light active and/or inactive controls for MaLa front end (user interface).
Light active and/or inactive controls for MAME emulation.
Light active and/or inactive controls for other emulators.
Remapping controls (MaLa or MAME) will automatically remap the associated LEDs.
With RGB LEDs, you can specify colors for individual controls or using a pre-defined colors.ini file, match the original game control panel button colors.
From the MaLa UI, game controls can be lit as you scroll through the game lists.
Designate LEDs as "Always Active" for use with coin, start, or administration controls.
Use the LED-Wiz built-in blinking effects.
Attract Mode animation when screen saver is active (this is a future enhancement).

But we already have a MaLa plug-in for the LED-Wiz! This is true - and the LEDWiz plug-in by Loadman and Edge is excellent! The primary difference is how the LED-Wiz hardware is linked to the game controls. The LEDBlinky plug-in maps the hardware by input codes (KEYCODE_A, KEYCODE_LSHIFT, MOUSECODE_1_ANALOG_X, etc.) This allows it to light the LEDs regardless of how you map or remap controls from within MaLa or MAME. It works more like PowerMame or Johnny5. The downside is - a more complex initial configuration.

Loadman and I have discussed the possibility of combining the two plug-ins, but we feel there's enough functional differentiation to keep them separate.

So, if you are already using the LEDWiz plug-in and/or don't often remap your game controls, then I'd stick with it! But, if you want your LEDs to dynamically reflect control remapping, then try the LEDBlinky plug-in.

Please refer to the Install and Config.doc file to get it up and running. Feedback and suggestions are always welcome. There may be a bug or two :), so let me know.
==Serial Display v1.1 by Loadman==

Use this plugin to display text on serial displays like a BetaBrite.

• Support for two displays (1xLCD & 1xBetaBrite)
• Loads Silver .lcd files
• Uses MaLa data to show current menu and game etc as you scroll
• Custom text for various events (screensaver, MaLa start)

==UltraStikMap v1.1 by Fatfingers==
This plugin will automatically apply map files (.ugc files) to your UltraStiks before the game is started and after the game has exited.

==Speech v1.0b by Loadman==

Soon to be updated

Bobulus: Added games with no two-player options

Many people save space by making their MAME cabinets with only enough controls for two players. But there are many 3-player and 4-player games which can be utilized on such a system, either by changing a software setting, using a mame rom clone, or by simply ignoring the extra player features. The following is a list of games that can be utilized in such a way.

Note: All these games are current as of MAME version .135. Future versions may change clone names, add in new options, etc.

==Dip switches==

* B. Rap Boys
* Blazing Tornado (must choose 'vs.' mode or 'team' mode)
* Bomber Man World
* Bucky O'Hare
* Crypt Killer
* Desert Breaker
* Dynablaster / Bomber Man
* Grudge Match
* Hit the Ice
* King of Dragons, The
* Knights of the Round
* Mercs (Also need to set coin chutes to 1)
* Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
* NBA Jam
* NBA Jam TE
* NFL Blitz '99
* NFL Blitz 2000 Gold Edition
* Paddle Mania (Set 'match type' to 'A to C')
* Revolution X
* Rim Rockin' Basketball
* Snow Bros. 2
* Stone Ball
* Super High Impact
* Super Slam
* Trog
* Turbo Force
* U.S. Championship V'ball
* Warlords
* Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa
* WWF WrestleFest

==Service Menu==

* Arabian Fight
* Armored Warriors
* Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
* Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom
* Dunk Mania
* Gauntlet Legends
* Gauntlet Dark Legacy
* Knuckle Heads
* Muscle Bomber Duo
* Numan Athletics
* Ring Rage
* Saturday Night Slam Masters
* Spider-Man: The Videogame
* Super World Court
* Warriors of Fate
* Wayne Gretzky's 3d Hockey

==Dip switches==

* B. Rap Boys
* Blazing Tornado (must choose 'vs.' mode or 'team' mode)
* Bomber Man World
==Service Menu==

The Service Menu can be accessed by hitting the F2 key in most games. (Some newer games require you to ''hold'' F2 for several seconds.) This brings up the game's configuration screen, where game options can be changed, as well as performing input and output calibrations.

If no Dip Switch or Service Menu changes enable a 2-player mode, your next recourse is use a clone of the game that is a 2-player version. Remember that for the game to work, you'll need roms for both the parent and the desired clone.
{{Portal|name=Software}}
[[Image:Typical-software.png|right|260px]]
A variety of '''Software''' and '''Emulators''' allow you to play a huge number of arcade, console and PC games on a computer. The software used as a foundation of a home arcade machine generally consists of an ''emulator(s)'' to run specific games (called ''roms'') on a computer and a ''front-end'' to provide a menu system to allow players to select from a list of games. Recently, the desire for multiple uses of an arcade cabinet and/or enhancing the game-playing experience have brought about the use of additional software, perhaps to play a PC game, allow use of the cabinet as a jukebox, or for lighting and configuration enhancements.

Software has gone through great leaps and bounds since the inception of this hobby. As an example, in the late 90's, a common route many people were choosing was the [http://www.mameworld.net/pc2jamma/ PC2Jamma] method originally conceived and implemented by Brian Lewis. Typically, MAME was used as a game emulator, ArcadeOS as the front-end, and DOS as the operating system, since this allowed the use of real arcade monitors. Since then, hardware has been developed to make using an arcade monitor from other operating systems simple, and more complex front-ends and emulators have been developed to utilize PC hardware better.

Be aware that many ROM images contain copyrighted material. There are a variety of utilities out there for managing your roms. They can let you see what you are missing, rename your roms, re-organise etc..etc...
A widely used and powerful utility is [[ClrMamePro]]. Another popular ROM management program is ROMCenter [http://www.romcenter.com].
